Proposal

Nine years ago, as a brand new teacher, I sat in on a session at our district's technology conference that made all the difference for me in how I would communicate with my students and their parents. As both a teacher and a parent myself, I was well aware that even the most well crafted, and adorable monthly newsletter was an ineffective means of communication. As a teacher, I felt like no one was reading it and as a parent I felt overwhelmed by the amount of information.

What struck me at the session was that I could convey short timely messages to parents when it was relevant. In addition, the possibility to follow the blog by email meant parents didn't have to seek out the information. It was delivered directly to them on their phone or computer.

After implementing my blog, I can say confidently I have never had or personally witnessed better classroom communication.  Flash forward a few years and my new teammates at Tarver Elementary noticed the same thing. I was able to get them started on their own blogs when I was transferred there four years ago.  This small transformation was witnessed by my administration and colleagues over time.  It was subsequently brought forward for discussion by our principal, Chris Trujillo, in a meeting with grade level chairs in the spring of 2016.  This results of that meeting led to the following proposal:
The session that got me blogging!

Tarver Elementary has had an assortment of classroom websites throughout the years. We have decided as a school to pick one platform for consistency for website visitors. After discussion
with the grade level leads, it was decided that we would all begin or maintain a classroom blog using Blogger.com.

Since this is the platform that I have used for many years myself, I was chosen to lead the charge. The goal of the project is to have all classroom teachers participate in creating and maintaining a classroom blog.

We will accomplish this goal with regularly scheduled professional development and individualized help provided by myself and my teammates who also are quite knowledgeable about the platform.

Success will be determined by the number of teachers who get and stay on board and the reaction of parents and students to the new platform.

We anticipate better and more clear communication with our parents and students which will foster a more cohesive and in touch community throughout the school.
